Agriş - The Calvinist Church

Available in:
There is no direct information on the building of the gothic church of the Agriş, but, according to its style, the edifice can be dated to the 15th century. The church became Calvinist during the next century. The sanctuary is ended with the three sides of an octagon. It has buttresses on the outsides, and a beautiful vault. Two windows are opened on the southern side of the sanctuary, and it is separated from the nave with a semicircular triumphal arch. The nave has a plane ceiling, probably it was never vaulted, because it has buttresses only on the western corners. The windows of the nave are similar to the ones from the sanctuary, they were probably built at the same time. In the arch, fragments of the mullions are preserved, their form, though, is not respecting the pointed arch frame of the windows. On the western façade, a new stone tower was built in place of the old wooden bell-tower, in 1955. The new tower built in neo-gothic style is in full harmony with the church. It has a steeple with four turrets, resembling the old wooden towers of the region. A precious element of the enterior is the organ, made in Debrecen, in 1899. The church has two bells, the small one was made in 1924, while the larger in 2002. (TSz).
