Bercu - The Calvinist Church

The nave of the church was made probably in the 15th century. The door and the two narrow, semicircular windows were on the southern façade, as usual for the gothic arhitecture. The original sanctuary was demolished during the restoration of 1840. The nave was extended in order to house more people at that time. The closing of the new part is semicircular. The pulpit added to the wall is worth mentioning as a special piece of furniture. A stone is integrated at the bottom of the pulpit, with the inscription: “Foedus cum Caesare” (Alliance with the Emperor). According to the local tradition, the protestant inhabitants put the stone on the wall of the nave commemorating the peace from Vienna (1606), where the freedom of religious conviction was recognized. The stone was laid on its present place during the restoration of the church. The crown of the pulpit was made in 1826, and the organ, in 1894. The tower of the church was built in 1956 (closely resembling the tower of the church of Agriş). The building has two bells, one was made in 1774, while the other in 1855. (TSz).
