Bârsău de Sus - The Orthodox Church of “The Birth of the Holy Virgin”

The church was the tallest in the area in 1828, the year of its construction. It was built at the highest point of the village, respecting the custom that the church should dominate the whole settlement. The building has a simple ground-plan, with a rectangular nave. The tower joining the nave has a square section, semicircular windows, and a baroque steeple. The tower was burnt, in 1893, after being struck by lightning. The apse is semicircular, this motif being reiterated on the windows of the nave. The old iconostasis, built in baroque style with popular influences, was replaced. During the First World War the walls of the church had been pock marked by bullets. The building was entirely restored in 1931 and it was consecrated by the Bishop of Maramureş, Dr. Alexandru Rusu. (DB).
