Muzeul
Judeţean Satu Mare a fost înfiinţat în anul 1901. În anul 1951 este
reorganizat ca Muzeul raional Satu Mare prin unificarea cu colecţiile
Muzeului orăşenesc Satu Mare, înfiinţat în anii 1930. Ulterior a fost
integrat în instituţie colecţia istorică a cercului Kolcsey şi a
colegiului reformat din Satu Mare, înfiinţate în anul 1891. Începând
din anul 1958 devine muzeu orăşenesc, iar, din 1968, este reorganizat
ca muzeu judeţean.
